Built over a century ago at the express wish of Queen Victoria, as the national monument to General Gordon, Gordon’s is listed as one of Britain’s outstanding schools by His Majesty’s Chief Inspector. A non-selective, co-educational day and boarding school, the school is in the top 5% of all schools in England and Wales for progress at A Level. However, the school’s ethos is that a good education is not just about outstanding examination results, but a thorough preparation for life.
Set in over 50 acres of Surrey countryside, Gordon’s is within easy reach of Heathrow and Gatwick Airports and close to London and train services. As well as state of the art sporting facilities, the school boasts a Theatre and is soon to become a Steinway School. A rich seam of heritage and tradition runs through Gordon’s, whose Patron is His Majesty The King. Students are proud of its history and the part they play. The tradition of marching, started in 1885 when the school first opened as a home for ‘necessitous boys’, is continued with drill every Friday, regular whole-school parades and an annual parade, led by the school’s Pipes and Drums through Whitehall to General
Gordon’s statue on the Thames. Marching not only instils discipline in the students but strengthens bonds and enforces unity and is just one of the many ways that students are encouraged to be the best they can be, for something bigger than themselves.
Over 50 per cent of its boarders are from Service families, attracted by the location and the school’s understanding of military life. Children from military families have priority for places and as well as providing the necessary environment for their physical, emotional and spiritual welfare, additional help is in place to plug any holes in their education.
Those beginning their boarding journey aged 11 enjoy a bespoke boarding house with Houseparents experienced in looking after children from Service families. The real judgement of Gordon’s is the students. All who visit are struck by the friendliness, discipline and vibrancy throughout the school
Gordon’s combines ‘outstanding’ boarding provision alongside some of the very best education in the country.
